As a few of you already know, Esprsso needs a new name. This hurts us too, trust us. But it’s time we face up to facts: we don’t have the .com and securing the trademark would involve a costly legal battle (thanks to USPTO claims of “potential confusion” with an existing trademark).

We’ve logged an embarrassing number of hours on godaddy and have a few possibilities, but we want you to help us decide. And if you can come up with any other options, please leave ‘em in the comments below. Thanks so much, everyone!

UPDATE: Screw it, we’re sticking with Esprsso! But please feel free to vote anyway or propose more suggestions in the comments below.

Don't go with rsspublica, no matter what the masses tell you.

newsgrass has good albert ayler connotation

Newsgrass is the best of the lot. It's a feed aggregator for stoned college kids at 4 am. Rsspublica is a cross between a fascist state and a bad clothing brand for middle-tier office workers.

Newsgrass will not play well in Peoria, and if you want this thing to truly scale, it will need to not alienate people who may not consider themselves "Newsies."

"Hey, have you tried out Newsgrass?"

"Yeah, I heard about it. But I just watch the news on TV."

"Well, I mean it's not really about news ... it's just ..."realizes that other person isn't paying attention

That's a sweet new picture, ANP. But the fact is that you don't want to start out by playing to Peoria. You don't want a bland, anyone-gets-it kind of site, you want a heavily jargonized site that middle-of-the-roaders have to struggle to understand. Niche it, get it used heavily by a small group, then make everyone else clamor to get in. That's the standard approach to taking over the world in 2007. Not that newsgrass is the best name in the world. I just think it has more promise that rsspublica.

We're talking about the name, not the site functionality. And unless the company wants to do a massive rebranding effort and go through this exercise again in 18 months, the name needs to not be niche.

Agree that rsspublica is not not not a good idea. But anything with "news" in the URL is too reductive.

As for "Niche it, get is used heavily by a small group, then make everyone else clamor to get in." Yeah. Not borne out by that many case studies, I'm 'fraid. As much as I would like it to be so. Because if this statement were true, my .com wouldn't have failed only to have the similarly-featured delicious become a huge success a few short years later.

Re: newsgrass, we (I?) just got a chuckle out of turning "weak / strong" into "mow it / grow it"

posted 1 year ago ago

Okay, so we disagree about niching and how often that idea has been borne out. But we do agree that rsspublica is bad. And I kind of agree with your point about "news" being too reductive. Though I love "mow it/grow it". And I love how Brett is now referring to himself in the plural. As far as your startup failing where delicious succeeded, we all have startups like that in our past, and there are lots of reasons for this. The most important one, and most overlooked one, is timing. The delicious idea succeeded when it was time was ripe for it. Mow that or grow that.

That last sentence makes no sense. I'll now stop drinking coffee.

Fuck, don't I have work to do?

posted 1 year ago ago

As my friend, felonynutbrain, used to say, "By 'we,' I assume you mean you and the mouse in your pocket." The funny thing was, he was right.

posted 1 year ago ago

Yeah, i don't think any of you are very funny.

Eh? Did Mister Ed just say something?

posted 1 year ago ago

"mow it / grow it" reminds me of a reality tv show idea -- a mashup between fear factor and elimidate... "fuck it / eat it."

(take it back, amos)

'groupink' 'newser' 'digrssion' 'verss' 'chorss' - like chorus - or maybe 'corss' 'morss' 'crosstalk' 'arsshole' ok, i'm done...

Thanks for all the ideas. We knew you creative types were the perfect people to ask, and we think we've decided on a name. Brett is going to make an anouncement. Shhhhhh. Please be quiet... (cough) Brett?

posted 1 year ago ago

he was rocking his balls off on stage a few hours ago - where the hell is the big announcement?

Apologies to all of you newsgrass smokers, postwavers, and rsspublicans but the survey results confirmed our suspicions... We came up with some really crappy names.

So, what the heck. Our awesome lawyer convinced us that our trademark woes aren't all that serious and a .com is so last boom anyway. We're keeping Esprsso.

Now on to victory.

Brett. Shit. My family owns that on VHS. And. On vinyl.

O.K. but I still liked TrssCompacter
